Toyota Puts $14B On North Carolina—Then Promises Another $10B To Outflank Tariffs

Japan Daily – Facebook

Toyota has officially begun production at its $13.9 billion battery manufacturing plant in Liberty, North Carolina, marking the automaker’s largest single investment in U.S. history.

The facility represents Toyota’s first battery plant outside Japan and marks a simultaneous announcement of an additional $10 billion commitment to U.S. operations over the next five years. This brings Toyota’s total American investment to nearly $60 billion since entering the market almost 70 years ago.

Strategic Response to Tariff Pressure

The Liberty plant spans 1,850 acres in Randolph County and is expected to produce 30 gigawatt-hours of lithium-ion batteries annually at full capacity. The state-of-the-art facility features 14 production lines: four for hybrid electric vehicles and ten for battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.

Production expansion is phased through 2030, allowing Toyota to match capacity with market demand.

Battery Applications for Popular Models

Unlike competitors rushing into all-electric vehicles, Toyota maintains a “multi-pathway approach” combining hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and battery electric vehicles.

In Q3 2025, electrified vehicles accounted for 44.9% of Toyota’s U.S. sales, with hybrids representing 46.9% of Toyota division sales. CEO Ted Ogawa emphasized that Toyota is “a pioneer in electrified vehicles,” demonstrating long-term commitment to diverse powertrain solutions.

Hybrid Market Dominance

Toyota’s hybrid strategy is delivering strong market results. In Q2 2025, Toyota held a 14.2% market share in the U.S., placing it second only to General Motors in total sales.

Dealers report that hybrid models—including the Camry Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid, and Grand Highlander—are selling as fast as they arrive, often pre-sold before reaching dealership lots.

Hybrid Sales Growth Outpacing Industry

The broader U.S. hybrid market is accelerating, with hybrid and plug-in hybrid sales up 36% in Q2 2025. Hybrids now represent approximately 22% of new light-duty vehicle sales in the U.S..

Strong consumer demand stems from improved affordability, the phase-out of federal EV tax credits, and growing concerns about fuel efficiency.
